When I entered into the classroom today, there was a guest speaker discussing an internship opportunity in Taiwan. The speaker was the head of the department, apparently. Louis Fullbright, I believe, but that’s uncertain. Could just be the program director.

Overview of HR

Human Resource Management is all the policies and practices a company uses in acquiring, training, appraising, and rewarding that organization’s employees.

Good HR management is important because a company’s results are obtained via the work of its employees. If you mistreat or mishandle your employees, you won’t be successful, no matter your other factors. Being proficient at HR management improves the company’s bottom line, avoid legal problems, and avoid financial mistakes.

Line and Staff aspects of a firm

The “Line” of an organization are the people directly involved in performing the primary functions of the organization. The “Staff” are the people who are employed to support and advise the line. HR is almost universally a staff position.

    • Changes in the nature of work — computerization, service vs. manufacturing
    • Composition of the workforce — racial, gender, education, origin
