Strategic Management, August 27 2008

Interesting start.  Class was overfull, so they split it in two.  Doesn’t change anything for me.Professor is Dr. T.A. Voelker.

This is the capstone course of the management degree.  It’s supposed to be the course that puts everything we’ve learned to this point together.  It’s supposed to be a transition class from academic learning to practical learning and implementation.

Voelker is sounding better and better the more he describes the class.  Lots of hands-on stuff, minimal talking-head.  Mom would approve.

Interesting grading plan.  Shows up in several places.  He’ll have a grade for a category of activities, like quizzes.  Each quiz will cumulatively add points to the category grade, up to the maximum points available to the that category.  There are more activities in each category than needed to get the maximum available points; i.e. six quizzes worth up to twenty points each, to a maximum of one hundred points.  It’s a plan that appeals to me, as being both forgiving of imperfection but not just fluffing up grades for free.

Lots of group work in this class.  Everyone here is graduating this semester, so hopefully we’re all motivated.
