Womack Report

HR, April 14 2008

Students are doing their extra credit reports today.  The reports generated by visiting various companies.Mandi is going first.  Three companies.  An oilfield transport company, an auto shop, and a construction/environmental company.  The auto shop was a little odd to me, since they had two HR people for fifteen employees.  That seems like a lot.  Had a fourth company, a bar where I suspect she works.  Biggest problem at the bar is turnover, which isn’t too surprising.  It’s a problem in any low-pay job, particularly one where you employ young people.  Mandi didn’t have a high opinion of their hiring practices, either.  I wonder, in situations like this, how much it’s to the bar’s benefit to invest more time and money in slowing employee turnover.  At Video Insight, we had this problem with tech support folks.  When we could get good people, it was absolutely worthwhile to hold onto them and make them happy, at least to a point.  They always had a limited lifespan, though, just like I did, and no amount of money would change that.  At least, no reasonable amount.  Bars might be like that; people will get tired and leave no matter what you do.
