Picking up where we left off.Socrates vs. Cephalus

Cephalus was an established Athenian; a conventional authority. At the same time Socrates was debating the Sophists, he was not defending Athenian convention. He had a dialog with Cephalus where he attacked him from a Sophist angle.

Justice, as traditionally defined by the Athenians, consisted of two principles.

  1. Give to each what is owed.
  2. Be good to your friends

It’s relatively simple to find examples where no solution satisfies both of those principles. For instance, do you give a drunk friend his car keys back? They’re his, so you owe them to him, but you’re not being good to him if you let him drive home.
