Womack Report

Business Writing, March 27 2008

Got my paper that’s due today done.  I don’t think it’s a work of art, but it shouldn’t make me fail, either.  Still have to get my group project for DSCI done, but a guy who’s in both this class and the DSCI class has offered to throw me some help there.  Should be doable.

Forgot to bring my chart or graph to class.  Nothing to do about it now.Apparently we’re discussing visual aids today.

Uses of Visual Aids:

  • Clarify test
  • Simplify complex information
  • Emphasize important points
  • Summarize major ideas
  • Reinforce Audience’s understanding
  • Attract attention
  • Add credibility to message
  • Unify text and illustrate relationship of ideas

There are four criteria to assess when deciding to use a particular graphic.

  1.  Is it necessary?
  2. Is it Accurate?
  3. Is it Honest?
  4. Is proper credit given?

It is important to keep a balance between graphics and text.  Graphics should be appropriate for the nature of the information being conveyed.  Don’t waste space on illustrations for minor points.  On the other hand, don’t overload text with data that would be better placed in an illustration.

Assignment for next week:

Create a visual aid I will use in my informal report.

Write the text that will introduce it and the analyis that will follow it.

Class as usual next week, professor will collect it and email us back.
