Marketing, November 15

Apparently the prof. was out sick on Tuesday. Something pretty alarming, but he’s back today, and fine. I’ve missed too many of these classes lately. When doing promotions, scheduling is extremely important. Some promotions have long lead times.

TV commercials are going through hard times. People are skipping them, which means advertisers are having to become more clever. It’s possible to insert ads semi-seamlessly into shows, similar to how sports programs insert graphics and ads.

Types of Advertisements

Product Advertising

  • Pioneering — introduce you to the product
  • Competitive — push features of product. If another feature is directly referenced, it’s a comparative ad, which is a subset of competitive ads.
  • Reminder — Reinforce previous knowledge

Institutional Advertisements

  • Advocacy — Support the Red Cross. Don’t buy fur. Etc.
  • Pioneering Institutional
  • Competitive Institutional
  • Reminder Institutional
