Marketing, September 6

Last Tuesday’s class was cancelled. About to get started up in here today.

Looks to be a class about social forces today. Picking up from last week.

Population shifts are a big deal. Simultaneous shifts to the suburbs and back to cities.

Multiculturalism matters. Lots of small segments of the population which can be targetted for greater effect or ignored at peril.

Culture is the set of values that is learned and shared from the surrounding group. U.S. culture is divisible into many subcultures. Texas subculture, urban subculture, southern subculture, etc.

U.S. culture is generally value-conscious. You can charge more for something if you can convince the customers that it’s higher quality, more pleasant, or otherwise of higher value than cheaper alternatives.

Macroeconomic conditions. Probably in an uptick right now. Actually, that’s pretty certain; economy has been running well for years. As always, there’s disagreement on thedegree of it.
