Allergies, and such

Filed under: General — Phillip Womack @ 9:05 pm

I’ve never had severe allergies.  Several people in my family always have, and I’ve been smug about my general good health in the past.

It was thus an ugly shock this winter when I came down with a severe allergy attack over several days.  I would begin sneezing, and my eyes would start waering suddenly and uncontrollably.  At first I attributed it to riding in the car of a friend who smokes, but two days later that excuse was wearing thin.

Fortunately, the source has become apparent.  I sat down in my mother’s office, rubbed my nose, and had an attack.  Bad enough that Mom commented on it.  She suggested it might be something environmental, we chatted, we moved on to other things.  We walked around for a while, then returned to her office.  I sat down again, rubbed my nose again, and had another attack.  The light went on in my head — rub nose, start sneezing.  Mom immediately suggested something in my pocket or jacket.  Sure enough, repeated testing showed that if I put my left hand in my jacket pocket, then touched my nose, WHAM!  Right hand pocket was less severe.  Not touching the jacket first made it less severe.

More tellingly, we had just experienced a coldsnap here, and it’s the first time I’ve worn that jacket in months.  Breaking it out, on reflection, exactly coincided with allergies cranking up.  Put the jacket back away today, and I’ve been fine.
So, now I need to figure out what is in that packet that wants to kill me.  But the problem is contained.

Mothers are very handy sometimes.

New Battery

Filed under: General — Phillip Womack @ 8:55 pm

My prior computer woes were definitely caused by the battery being dead. I went and retrieved the new battery from my parents’ house, where I had it shipped by accident, and I’m back up to full capability.

Better than full capability, actually. The battery life on this thing is more than two and a half hours, at full charge. The original battery that came with it lasted less than one hour, out of the box. I expected the longer life, since the original battery was a four-cell, and this one is eight-cell, but it’s still nice.

Hopefully this battery won’t lose lifespan steadily and die within a year, like the last one. I’ll try to treat it with a bit more consideration, but I was very unhappy with the original’s performance.

The new battery came from a company called Replacement Power. Replacement batteries seem to be all they do.

Accounting, Day 3

Got my textbook today. That should be helpful. Need to leave a little earlier in the morning. Wasn’t late, but I was only a minute or two before the bell. Given past tendencies, that’s not enough margin. (more…)

Magic prerelease

Filed under: General — Phillip Womack @ 12:00 am

Went to the Planar Chaos prerelease for Magic: The Gathering today. Latest. Seven or so of us went and hung out all day. Overall, a good time was had, but the whole thing drug on too long.

It always drags on too long. You’d think I’d learn. My brother had the right idea; he showed up halfway through, and just played at the end.

After about fourteen hours of card games, however, I thnk I’ve played enough MAgic for one weekend.

Instructor Tracy Samuel. Young looking professor, not that I’m a good judge of age. Overheard one student saying nice things about her teaching in a previous class, though. That’s encouraging.

Friday Morning

Filed under: General — Phillip Womack @ 9:53 am

Sitting here at the Fairbanks center waiting for my 9:00 AM class.  Not a big fan of 9:00 AM.  Would just as soon trade it for, say, 10:00.

Meeting Jeffrey later today to do some generic hanging out.  That’ll be good.

Need to puchase textbooks, still.  And get resumes out to people.  Put that off too long already.
